At CReATe a kids' book we help people write stories for children. We can nurture your writing and lead you in the right direction. We do this through workshops, e-courses, mentoring and by assessing manuscripts. CReAte a kids' book was started by Dr Virginia Lowe and artist Jacqui Young in 1997. She has lectured in English, children's literature and creative writing at university, been a Judge for the CBCA annual awards, written extensively on children's responses to books, and been around children's books for many years,. A pubished author in the field of chidren's litrature, Stories, Pictures and Reality: Two children tell studies children's perceptions of reality and imagination in the context of the written and pictured text. It uses a detailed case study of a boy and a girl from infancy to eight. Jacqui now illustrates full time, and regrets having to leave us as we regret losing her. Workshops: Would you like to create a book for children? Possibly a picture book? Or perhaps a novel for older children or adolescents? CReATe a kids’ book offers one-day workshops, under the guidance of two experienced and enthusiastic children's book people, Dr. Virginia Lowe (words) and Jo Thompson (illustrations). They will work with you on the creation of your story and advise on presentation for submission to a publisher. Workshops on novel writing ( YA and short “chapter books”) with Virginia and novelist Jennifer Dabbs are also available. Between them, our tutors have a wealth of knowledge about the history of children's literature and contemporary literary theory, as well as a solid understanding of the Australian publishing scene. Previous participants have found the workshop is conducive to creativity and have acknowledged the value of sharing stories and techniques with others, as well as benefiting from the individual attention of the tutors. Many of them return time and time again some have been published (see the successess). Book your place in a workshop today. Manuscript assessments: Written for all levels of children, tots to teens - assessed with every page read and commented on. The price includes copy editing (grammar, punctuation, etc). Subsequent drafts are accepted. You can have direct contact with you assessor if needed. American Manuscripts: Our assessor Marlo Garnsworthy is currently living in the USA. She has had several books accepted for publication there, and will be assessing manuscripts for all ages of children, bringing to the task her knowledge of the US market E-Courses and Mentoring: Sign up for one of our e-courses (10 modules) on creating picture books or writing chapter books and novels, either with personalised feedback from the tutors, or as documents only.
